Woman in critical condition at the hospital after 'near-drowning' at Gray's Lake Park

A woman is in the hospital after she nearly drowned at Gray’s Lake Park on Friday, July 4.

Police and fire crews got a call around 4:30 p.m. about a person receiving CPR at Gray’s Lake Park, at 2101 Fleur Dr, according to a news release from the Des Moines Police Department. The 911 caller said it was a “potential drowning situation,” according to the release.

First responders continued lifesaving efforts on the woman, who was in critical condition, as they took her to Unity Point Methodist Medical Center, police said. She was still hospitalized late Friday night.

Police said they were continuing to investigate the near-drowning, and said there’s no danger to other park users.

An estimated 4,000 people die from unintentional drowning every year in the U.S., Des Moines police officials wrote in a Facebook post on June 17. That’s an average of 11 deaths per day.

In Iowa, more than 30 people have drown in the state’s waters each year in recent years.
