When will the leaves change colors? Check Iowa's fall foliage map

Even though temperatures around Iowa remain in the high 70s and mid-80s, it is still officially fall time.

With a 60-degree start to the second week of October, the leaves on trees should start to turn red as October progresses.

It is still early in the season for northeastern Iowa, while north central and northwestern Iowa are starting to see some color change in Red maples, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

When is the best time to see fall foliage in Iowa?

Naturally, northern Iowa will be the first to witness autumn paint the trees orange, red and yellow. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says traditionally the best time to see fall colors in northern Iowa is during the last week of September through the second week of October.

Central Iowa, from the western to eastern border, can expect peak autumn foliage by the first week to the third week in October. Southern Iowa won’t catch the color change until the second to fourth week of October.

Where to view fall foliage around the Des Moines metro?

A walk through a park can offer a view of the season change, but there are also spots around Iowa known for the fall sights.

The High Trestle Trail Bridge near Madrid spans the Des Moines River, bordered by foliage. If you aren’t into walking, the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad and Rail Explorer is an 11-mile road trip through the Des Moines River Valley.
