When is MLK Day 2026? See events near Des Moines to honor King's legacy

Now that 2026 has officially begun, people across America are just days away from commemorating the life of Martin Luther King, Jr.

King was a civil rights activist who advocated for racial equality in the 1950s and 1960s. He was initially the spokesperson for the Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955.

In 1963, King was a critical figure in the “March on Washington,” where he delivered his infamous “I Have A Dream” speech to more than 250,000 people who made their way to the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

King went on to become the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

With King as one of the prominent figures behind the Civil Rights Movement, the United States went on to pass both the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act in the 1960s.

King was ultimately assassinated in 1968 in Memphis at the Lorraine Motel.

While his dream remains unfulfilled, Americans remember his legacy and commemorate his life on Dr. Martin Luther King Day.

Here’s more on the commemorative holiday.
