Vote for the Register female Athlete of the Week for June 14-20

The week of June 14-20 saw high school softball take center stage in the Des Moines metro area.

It was the first week of softball without any spring sports taking place. There were several exciting games featuring schools from the metro area.

Adel-Desoto-Minburn took down No. 1 Carlisle by a 2-1 score at Carlisle on June 17 in a battle between two of the top teams in Class 4A. Dallas Center-Grimes, currently the No. 4 team in 5A, swept 4A No. 12 Norwalk in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader on June 18 in Grimes and there were several other exciting matchups featuring metro-area teams during the week.

The week was full of impressive individual performances from metro-area softball players.

Here are the Des Moines Register’s female Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of June 14-20. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Addie Abens, DCG

Abens smacked seven of her state-leading 17 home runs for the 5A No. 4 Dallas Center-Grimes softball team during the weeek.

Abens hit one home run apiece during a 10-0, 14-6 doubleheader sweep of Pella on June 15 at Pella, and she also went deep once during an 11-0 victory over Oskaloosa on June 17 at Grimes. Abens homered twice in two separate games for the Mustangs at the Jack North Tournament in Waukee on June 20, finishing with two homers and four RBIs during an 8-2 win over No.11 Bettendorf and two homers and five RBIs in a 95 victory over No. 7 Pleasant Valley.

Allie Harrigan, Des Moines Christian

The Des Moines Christian freshman homered twice during the Lion softball team’s 4-2 victory over Panorama as part of a doubleheader on June 18 in Des Moines.

Harrington went 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs and RBIs apiece for DMC.

Aniston Netten, Van Meter

Netten was overpowering in the circle for the 3A No. 5 Van Meter softball team during the Bulldogs 9-1 victory over Earlham on June 15 at Van Meter.

Netten fired a two-hitter in six innings. She gave up one unearned run and mowed down 13 batters on strikes with just one walk.

Clara Page, Des Moines Roosevelt

Page helped the 5A No. 14 Des Moines Roosevelt softball team sweep Mason City by scores of 4-0 and 11-0 on June 18 in Des Moines.

Page was 1-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece and she made nine putouts with no errors at first base during the 4-0 Roughrider victory. Page threw four perfect innings with two strikeouts, and she was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs during the 11-0 win.

Kinzie Maxwell, ADM

Maxwell had a big game swinging the bat for the 4A No. 1 Adel-Desoto-Minburn softball team during a 10-1 win over 2A No. 2 Interstate 35 on June 19 at the Kiwanis Invitational in Roland.

Maxwell went 3-for-3 with a home run for the Tigers. She drove in four runs during the game.
