The week of June 15-21 saw Ames-area softball teams engage in several competitive battles.
Ames, ranked No. 12 in Class 5A, went 3-1 at the Fort Dodge Invitational on June 20-21 with wins over 1A No. 3 Newell-Fonda, Ankeny and 3A No. 2 Williamsburg and a loss to 4A No. 15 Winterset. Gilbert was 2-1 at the Kiwanis Invitational in Roland on June 20-21 with wins over Humboldt and 2A No. 10 Central Springs and a loss to 3A No. 5 Mount Vernon.
The Tigers also defeated 3A No. 3 Prairie City-Monroe on June 19 at Gilbert.
Ballard and Nevada both went 0-3, and Roland-Story fell to Benton at the Kiwanis Invitational. Collins-Maxwell came up short against Clarksville and Colo-NESCO suffered four losses.
There were several outstanding individual performances from area players during the week.

Mya Geffre, Ames
Geffre was explosive with the bat for the 5A No. 12 Ames softball team during a 7-3 victory over Des Moines Roosevelt as part of a doubleheader on June 16 at Des Moines.
Geffre went 3-for-4 with a solo home run. She scored two runs during the game for the Little Cyclones.
Clara Newton, Gilbert
Newton continued to shine for the Gilbert softball team during its big 4-1 victory over 3A N. 3 PCM on June 19 at Gilbert.
Newton gave up one run on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks in seven innings as the winning pitcher. She also belted a solo home run for the Tigers.
Callahan Coffelt, Collins-Maxwell
Coffelt was the lone bright spot for the Collins-Maxwell softball team during a 13-2 loss to 1A No. 1 Clarksville in five innings on June 16 at Collins.
Coffelt went 1-for-2 at the plate, and she drove in both Spartan runs during the game.
Jadyn Niemeyer, Colo-NESCO
Niemeyer had a productive game on offense in a losing effort for the Colo-NESCO softball team during an 8-4 setback against Dunkerton on June 19 at Dunkerton.
Niemeyer finished 2-for-4 during the game. She scored two runs and drove in one for the Royals.
Cece Hart, Gilbert
Hart had strong outings swinging the bat for the Gilbert softball team during a 16-0 win at Nevada on June 17 and an 8-2 win over Humboldt on June 20 at the Kiwanis Invitational.
Hart went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and three RBIs against Nevada. She finished 2-for-3 with an RBI versus Humboldt.
