West Des Moines Valley softball player Maddie Zlomke and Waukee baseball player Grant Sorensen were voted the Des Moines Register’s metro-area female and male Athlete of the Week winners for the week of June 8-14.
Zlomke won female Athlete of the Week with 51% of the vote.
Zlomke threw an impressive game for the Class 5A No. 3 West Des Moines Valley softball team during an 8-0 victory over 3A No. 2 Wahlert Catholic on June 14.
She fired a one-hitter against the Golden Eagles, striking out six batters and walking just two.
Sorensen dominated the male Athlete of the Week voting by receiving 76% of the vote.
He lifted the 4A No. 6 Waukee baseball team past 2A No. 3 Unity Christian by a 4-3 score in nine innings on June 14.
Sorensen was 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of triples during the game. He walked twice, scored one run and drove in two.
