The National Weather Service Office forecast includes possible tornadoes and damaging winds amid cycles of storms on Thursday. Here’s what to know.
What is the severe weather outlook in Iowa for the next 24 hours?
A slight, or Level 2 (out of 5), risk is in place for most of the state on Thursday, with only portions of northwest and eastern Iowa under a Level 1 risk.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms with lightning and up to 1 inch hail are possible this morning, but the main severe threat arrives after 3 p.m. and lasts through around midnight, according to the NWS.
Will there be tornadoes in Iowa on Friday?
Tornadoes are possible with storms that develop. NWS did not estimate how strong any tornadoes could become if they form.
Des Moines is in the 2–4% tornado probability range, while the highest risk, 5–9%, is in southwest Iowa, from Denison to Lamoni.
When will storms arrive in Iowa?
Severe weather is most likely in the Des Moines metro between 7 and 11 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Some rain or thunderstorms are possible before this time, but are expected to be below severe limits, the weather service said.

What’s the forecast for Des Moines?
Showers and thunderstorms are likely in Des Moines on Thursday, mainly before 5 p.m., with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 73 degrees, according to the NWS. Thunderstorms continue Thursday night before tapering off after midnight, with a low around 48 degrees.
Friday will be sunny with a high near 64 degrees, and northwest winds around 10 mph. Skies remain mostly clear Friday night as temperatures drop to around 43 degrees.
