A teen is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of another teen on July 4 in West Des Moines.
Late Saturday, July 4, West Des Moines police responded to a call about a shooting at a party in the 1100 block of 20th Place in West Des Moines. Upon arrival, police found 17-year-old Teonnie Tillman with a gunshot wound. She later died at the hospital.
Byrone Sanchez-Zermeno, 18, was previously arrested in connection with the shooting on July 5 and charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an argument between Sanchez-Zermeno and Miles Lee, 17. Lee was arrested and charged with first-degree murder on Thursday, July 16, according to a news release from West Des Moines police spokesperson Sgt. Dan Wade. Police believe Tillman was an uninvolved bystander.
Lee is charged as an adult in the shooting “because of the severity of the allegation,” according to Wade. He is in the custody of the Polk County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond with a preliminary hearing set for July 27, according to court filings.
Sanchez-Zermeno is in the custody of the Polk County Jail on unrelated charges including violation of probation and unauthorized possession of offensive weapons. Charges related to the shooting were dismissed, according to court filings.
