Narrow but deep sinkhole closes Neal Smith Trail again

A sinkhole that closed the Neal Smith Trail in May is back again. This time, it’s about 10 feet deep — but only around the width of a hand.

The boardwalk area near UnityPoint Health’s Iowa Lutheran Hospital was temporarily repaired, but recent inspections found that the sinkhole had returned. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department is closing the trail “out of an abundance of caution” until further notice.

Public Works and Parks and Recreation staff are developing a long-term solution. There is no official detour, as of Wednesday, July 15.
