More severe storms possible Wednesday. See Iowa rainfall totals

Most of Iowa is preparing for another round of thunderstorms as the National Weather Service office in Des Moines warns that more severe weather is likely across the state on Wednesday, April 15.

Storms swept across Iowa for a second day on Tuesday, April 14. There were several reports of large hail across eastern Iowa, and videos of a hailstorm around the Waterloo area were shared online. Rain and the threat of severe weather continued on Wednesday.

What is the severe weather outlook in Iowa for the next 24 hours?

A Slight, or Level 2 (out of 5), risk is in place for most of Iowa on Wednesday, April 15, stretching from Council Bluffs to Dubuque.

Storms will move quickly — around 45 mph — from western Iowa into central and eastern parts of the state, with hail up to 2 inches and wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph posing the primary threats. A higher risk of tornadoes exists near the Interstate 80 corridor, where tornadoes could reach EF2 strength.

What’s the forecast in Des Moines?

In Des Moines, the primary severe weather threat is expected from mid‑afternoon into early evening. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a high near 74 degrees. Storm chances taper off Wednesday night, and the low is 54 degrees

How much rain did Des Moines get?

Des Moines received 0.91 inches of rainfall during that period, with most falling between 12 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Des Moines has already recorded more than twice its average rainfall for April, with 3.79 inches measured as of Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Eldora tornado damage reported

The storm system that developed in Iowa eventually led to multiple tornadoes in Wisconsin on Tuesday.

A brief tornado with damage to a building was reported by the Hardin County Emergency Management Agency.
