Incumbent Kevin Trevillyan has staved off a challenge from Jennie Doke-Kerns to win another term on the West Des Moines City Council in the Nov. 4 election.
Trevillyan took 54% of the vote to continue representing West Des Moines’ First Ward on the east side, according to unofficial results from the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office.
Trevillyan, a 63-year-old retiree who has represented the city’s First Ward for 16 years, said keeping a balanced budget and maintaining city services and infrastructure were his top priorities while facing state law changes that have crunched local budgets.
West Des Moines voters reelect Loots, Hardman in uncontested races
Two incumbents also comfortably won election to another term — Doug Loots in West Des Moines’ Third Ward and Renee Hardman to an at-large council seat. They received 98% and 96% of the vote, respectively, according to unofficial results.
West Des Moines Democrats on Oct. 21 nominated Hardman to run for the Iowa Senate District 16 seat to fill the vacancy left by the late Sen. Claire Celsi, who died Oct. 6.
That special election is set for Dec. 30, and with Democrats favored to win the seat encompassing parts of West Des Moines, Clive and Windsor Heights, it’s likely Hardman won’t carry out her third four-year term on the city council. She said she will resign should she win the election to the Iowa Senate.
