Iowa women's basketball outlasts Nebraska: Final Score, Recap

Iowa women’s basketball (12-2, 3-0 Big Ten) defeats rival Nebraska (12-2, 1-2 Big Ten) by a score of 86-76 to ring in the New Year from Carver-Hawkeye Arena and improve to 3-0 in conference play.

Overall, Nebraska (29-for-58 shooting, 6-for-20 3-point accuracy) and Iowa (28-for-57 shooting, 7-for-20 3-point accuracy) have essentially traded buckets most of the game. However, the Hawkeyes were efficient from the foul line (23-for-28), while the Cornhuskers were also successful in their limited opportunities at the stripe by going 12-for-15.

Wright led the Hawkeyes in scoring with 24 points on 5-for-12 shooting, 3-for-5 from 3-point range, and 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. Steulke also had 21 points and 10 rebounds, along with Heiden’s 18 points and seven rebounds to round out the trio of double-digit Hawkeyes scorers.

Britt Prince led the Cornhuskers with 27 points on 10-for-18 from the floor, 2-for-4 from deep, and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe, with Jessica Petrie following up with 17 points.

Defensively, the Hawkeyes have forced 18 turnovers, including eight steals and three blocks.

Cornhuskers close out the third quarter with a little bit of a scoring run to cut the Hawkeyes’ lead down to just three points entering the final frame.

Iowa’s defense has been suffocating to open the third quarter, allowing the Hawkeyes to take the lead with inside scoring from Ava Heiden.

Unfortunately, Heiden has picked up three fouls, sending her to the bench with foul trouble.

Iowa also appealed an offensive foul call on Taylor Stremlow, but the challenge was unsuccessful and has cost the Hawkeyes a 30-second timeout.

Both teams are playing very well on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor to close out the second quarter and first half, making this feel like anybody’s game.

Overall, Nebraska (20-for-33 shooting, 5-for-10 3-point accuracy) and Iowa (16-for-28 shooting, 5-for-12 3-point accuracy) have essentially traded buckets all game. However, the Hawkeyes have been perfect from the foul line (7-for-7), while the Cornhuskers have not made a trip to the charity stripe yet.

Britt Prince is now up to 17 points on 8-for-11 from the floor, with Jessica Petrie following up with 13 points of her own on 4-for-7 shooting and 3-for-4 from deep.

Wright leads the Hawkeyes in scoring with 12 points so far on 3-for-5 shooting, 2-for-3 from 3-point range, and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Steulke also has 11 points, along with Heiden’s 10.

Hawkeyes will need to find depth scoring in the third and fourth quarters to help aid those three scorers in this tightly contested affair that is trending towards a dramatic finish.

Defensively, the Hawkeyes have forced seven turnovers, including two steals and two blocks. Meanwhile, Iowa has totaled nine turnovers of its own, allowing Nebraska to record seven steals and two blocks.

Iowa opens the second quarter on fire from the floor with buckets, but Nebraska is still able to respond on its end.

Britt Prince has been electric from the floor with 13 points on 5-for-7 from the field. Hawkeyes need to find a way to slow the skilled 5-foot-11 sophomore guard.

Wright leads the Hawkeyes in scoring with 10 points so far on 3-for-5 shooting, 2-for-3 from 3-point range, and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.

End of 1st QTR: Nebraska 21, Iowa 18

Nebraska and Iowa both respond well after the media timeout, as both teams continue to battle through the rest of the opening quarter of this fiercely contested Top 25 rivalry matchup.

Iowa is playing very aggressively on defense, but the Hawkeyes’ shots just haven’t fallen as often as desired.

However, the Hawkeyes have climbed back in by speeding up the Cornhuskers’ offense and cashing in on the other end.

Iowa released its game day availability report versus Nebraska, and it once again includes a pair of key names for the Hawkeyes. Graduate senior guard Kylie Feuerbach is again listed as questionable, and sophomore wing Emely Rodriguez remains out.

But Nebraska’s game day availability report revealed that the Huskers will be without their second-leading scorer and top rebounder against Iowa. Sophomore forward Amiah Hargrove, who averages 12.0 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, is listed as out for Nebraska.
