Iowa women's basketball coach back on hand to support WNBA star

In her seemingly non-stop travels over the past week, Iowa women’s basketball head coach Jan Jensen took another excursion just a few hours north of Iowa City on Friday to watch former Hawkeyes star Lucy Olsen and the Washington Mystics against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx from Minneapolis.

This is Jensen’s second WNBA game attended in the past six days as she and former legendary head Hawkeyes women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder traveled to Las Vegas to see former Iowa stars Kate Martin and Megan Gustafson compete against one another on Sunday night.

In a humorous tease at her travel plans, Jensen posted a selfie of her wearing a gold Lucy Olsen Iowa jersey while on her short commercial flight to the Twin Cities.

Jensen’s social media posts did not stop there as the head coach eventually met up with Olsen before the Mystics began their pregame preparations.

In her second post of the day, Jensen shared her excitement to watch the 2025 No. 22 overall selection play while also tying in Olsen’s trademarked phrase “Basketball is Fun.”

With coach in attendance, Olsen knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to score six points, assisted three times, grabbed two boards and had one block in 20 minutes of action.

Given Washington’s recent trade deadline moves that shipped out multiple high-production players, Olsen’s playing time hovering around the low-20s could be a trend moving forward as the team evaluates potential for next season.

While the Mystics went toe-to-toe against the Lynx, Alanna Smith’s 25-point eruption proved to be just enough to push Minnesota to an 80-76 victory and improve to 16-1 from their home court at the Target Center.

Olsen and the Mystics will conclude their four-game road trip on Sunday, when the team travels to face the Dallas Wings at 3 p.m. CT in Dallas. The game will be broadcast on CBS.

Once this WNBA season concludes, Olsen will be headed to Australia to join WNBL squad Townsville. Olsen signed with the Townsville Fire in July.
