The Iowa Department of Transportation will close Interstates 80 and 35 overnight to begin the long-term closure of two more ramps as part of the interstate’s reconstruction near Hickman Road.
Drivers will need to use detours during the interstate’s closure and find alternative ramps for several months.
When will northbound I-80/35 close from the southwest mixmaster to Iowa Highway 141
Beginning at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, until 4 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, weather permitting, crews will close northbound I-80/35 from the southwest mixmaster until the Iowa Highway 141 interchange, the DOT said.
During this time, crews will be installing temporary barriers and pavement markings for the ramp closures.
What I-80/35 ramps will close on Thursday, Sept. 3?
The Iowa DOT will close the northbound on-ramp from University Avenue to I-80/35 and the northbound off-ramp to U.S. Highway 6/Hickman Road starting Wednesday, Sept. 3.
The closures are part of continued work to rebuild the Hickman Road interchange, which is in the first year of a three year project. The ramps are expected to be closed until late December.
The ramps join two southbound ramps that closed at the end of August.
What is the detour when the Iowa DOT closes northbound I-80/35?
When I-80/I-35 is closed, drivers need to use the southwest mixmaster to each westbound Interstate 235. Drivers will then exit at Valley West Drive and head north. The road will become 100th Street and eventually Northwest Urbandale Drive. From there drivers will be able to rejoin I-80/35 at the Highway 141 interchange.
What is the detour when the University Avenue and Hickman Road ramps are closed?
Until Sept. 15, drivers wanting to enter I-80/35 at University Avenue will need to continue west on University Avenue, turn north on NW 128th Street, cross Hickman Road and continue north on 129th Street and then head east on Douglas Avenue to connect with northbound I-80/35.
The northbound on ramp at Hickman Road is expected to reopen on Sept. 15. Once that happens, drivers will be able to head east on Hickman Road and enter I-80/35 there, instead of going all the way to Douglas Avenue.
Drivers wanting to exit the interstate at Hickman Road will need to instead exit at Douglas Avenue, head west and then turn south on Northwest 128th Street to reach Hickman Road.
