Sophie Cunningham: WNBA players ‘definitely targeting’ Caitlin Clark

Never afraid to speak her mind, Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham commented on the incident involving teammate Caitlin Clark that resulted in Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas receiving a Flagrant Foul 2 penalty and a one-game suspension.

“During real time last night, I did not see that happen,” Cunningham said on the most recent episode of her podcast with West Wilson. “None of our team saw it happen, because I promise you, if we would have seen that happen, we would have had (Clark’s) back. Unfortunately, this type of (expletive) happens every single game to (Clark), and the league and the refs do absolutely nothing about it.

“You see the videos of literally kneeing and cheap-shotting (Clark) in the throat. If (Thomas) did that to any of our teammates, we’d be pissed. But they are definitely targeting (Clark), and the league and the refs do nothing to protect her,” Cunningham said.

Cunningham has previously been fined for comments on her “Show Me Something” podcast and for a TikTok she posted last season. It would not be a surprise if the former Missouri Tiger were to incur some form of discipline from the league office once more.

The Fever and Clark are in the midst of an extended break. Indiana won’t play again until it travels to the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, July 5.

Clark missed the Fever’s Saturday win over the Los Angeles Sparks with a back injury. It was Clark’s second injury absence of the season. Fans hope that the lengthy break can help Clark return to action quickly and keep her injury absence to just the lone game.
