From classic summer traditions to an early start to the fall season, here are four weekend events to check out in Iowa City as August gets underway.
Pick sweetness at Wilson’s Orchard
Thursday to Sunday: Step aside, berries; it is apple season at Wilson’s Orchard. The first weekend of August invites guests to pick the first apples of the season at the local orchard, which has been growing them since 1980. Visitors can browse the fields at their own pace from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., searching for the tart and juicy Lodi apple, the most fleeting of apple season, best for applesauce and baking.
TGIF with the Friday Night Concert Series
Friday: Chill out with Summer of the Arts Friday Night Concert Series, featuring The Trollies. The free concert is set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 10, featuring originals from the folk-rock band spanning its two decades-long run.
Celebrate seasonal splendor at The Iowa City Farmers’ Market
Saturday: The Iowa City Farmers’ Market will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., on Saturday, Aug 1, at the Chauncey Swan Parking Ramp. Browse dozens of local vendors selling local produce, meats, specialty foods, handcrafted artisanal items, and small business wares.
Live from the Northside, it’s Saturday Night
Saturday: There’s still time to enjoy Northside Saturday Nights. The weekly free concert series, featuring local musicians, takes place every Saturday through the end of September. Fork in the Road will grace the outdoor stage from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 1, covering the likes of the Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers.
