Not only do the Iowa Hawkeyes produce some of the best NFL talent and develop players on the field as well as anyone else in the country, but they are also a pipeline of former players with high football IQ that becomes standout coaches.
The latest former Hawkeye to continue this trend is Joe Evans, the defensive lineman who spent 2019 to 2023 with the Hawkeyes under defensive coordinator Phil Parker’s scheme and teaching style. Evans is joining the Rutgers coaching staff.

Evans was previously coaching the defensive line for the Drake Bulldogs, a fellow program in the state of Iowa.
Joe Evans, a product of Ames High School in Ames, Iowa, chose the Hawkeyes over the local Iowa State Cyclones, which proved to be a fruitful decision. Evans played in 56 games, registering 27 starts.
He tallied 135 total tackles, 35 tackles for loss, 28 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 6 pass breakups. His 28 sacks ranked fourth all-time in Iowa history, as well as setting a program record of four sacks in the final game of his collegiate career.
