Flags at half-staff in remembrance of State Sen. Julian Garrett

Gov. Kim Reynolds has ordered flags around Iowa to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday, June 20, in remembrance of State Sen. Julian Garrett, who died earlier this month.

Garrett, 85, of Indianola, served in the Iowa Legislature for 16 years and died June 8 after a battle with prostate cancer.

He was elected to the Iowa House in 2010 and 2012 and won a 2013 special election to the Iowa Senate, where he was reelected three times, beginning in 2014. Garrett represented Iowa Senate District 11, which encompasses all of Warren County and central Marion County, including Knoxville.

“Sen. Garrett was a friend who served our state with integrity–whether as a cattle producer, a Little League coach, an attorney in the executive branch, or a legislator,” Reynolds said in a news release Friday. “For 15 years, we worked together to unleash opportunities for the Iowans we served, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.”

Flags across the state will fly at half-staff on Saturday, the day of his funeral.

How long will flags be at half-staff in Iowa?

Flags at the Iowa State Capitol and the Capitol complex, as well as at all public buildings, grounds and facilities across Iowa, will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, June 20.

Others, including individuals, schools, businesses and government subdivisions, are encouraged to fly flags at half-staff.
