Andrew E. Verwers, 53, was standing in a median at the intersection when a pickup truck went over the median and hit him, according to the Des Moines Police Department. Medics transported Verwers to an area hospital, where he later died.

Mario Ricardo Campos, 44, has been charged with homicide by a vehicle, a class B felony, and leaving the scene of an accident causing death, a class D felony.

Police received reports of Campos driving recklessly just minutes before the crash, according to a prior news release.

Campos is being held at Polk County Jail, and evidence indicates he was impaired at the time of the crash, police said. The investigation is still ongoing.

This is Des Moines’ seventh traffic-related fatality of 2025, a news release said.
