Iowa City is ushering in the fall season, marking the end of annual summer traditions and the return of fall favorites. Here are six events to check out in Iowa City this weekend:
March into the weekend at the University of Iowa homecoming parade
Friday: One of the University of Iowa’s and Iowa City’s favorite traditions is back. Starting at 5:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in downtown Iowa City, the homecoming parade will march through the corridor with floats, performers, and thrilling excitement ahead of Saturday’s football game when the Hawkeyes take on the Indiana Hoosiers.
The parade will move west on Washington St. to Gilbert St., then head north on Clinton St., east on Jefferson St., south on Dubuque St., east on Iowa Ave., and will end at the intersection of Iowa Ave. and Gilbert St.
Teezo Touchdown brings the beat to the Pentacrest
Friday: The good vibes don’t end after the University of Iowa homecoming parade. At 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, head over to the Pentacrest for a free concert as part of the annual homecoming traditions. Teezo Touchdown is headlining the concert, a rapper who catapulted to fame in the early 2020s for his innovation in the subgenre of “rock and boom,” a fusion of R&B with the intensity of rock and the booming production of rap music. The DJ collective from Chicago, nostrangrs, is the opening act for the concert.
TGIF with local Iowa City artists at the Friday Night Concert Series
Friday: The Summer of the Arts Friday Night Concert Series will come to a close for the season with a supersized night of local music. Ion, Alyx Rush and Jack Lion will showcase the best innovators of Iowa City’s local music scene from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on the Pedmall.
Live from the Northside, it’s Saturday night
Saturday: The Northside Saturday Nights concert series will end for the summer season on Saturday, Sept. 27. Ushering in the changing of seasons is local band Silt Creek, comprised of Ryan Bernemann, Chris Dimond and Ben Schmidt. Singer-songwriter sensibilities inspire Silt Creek’s sound, characterized by a keen eye for rich harmonies and playful improvisation, which creates a unique sound. The evening’s show begins at 6 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m.
Spend Sunday in the sun at the Get Outside Festival
Sunday: Iowa City Parks and Recreation’s Get Outside Festival returns for the third year from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at City Park. The Get Outside Festival offers recreational and wellness activities that highlight the natural landscapes of Iowa City. The free event allows residents to explore nature without having to venture far. Guests can explore various outdoor activities and connect with local organizations, clubs and businesses to kick off their outdoor journey.
Celebrate 10 years of the Front Porch Music Festival
Sunday: The Front Porch Music Festival is an annual neighborhood celebration of music-making in the Longfellow neighborhood. The local music festival will be celebrating 10 years of the neighborly tradition from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28. The festival will feature a diverse lineup from skill level to age, and genres from jazz to folk and rock to classical.
