Would it be Iowa Hawkeyes football if there wasn’t a glaring question mark around the quarterback position? It’s like clockwork. Each year, the focus for the Hawkeyes and their faithful turns to the quarterback position, which is something that needs to be unlocked this year.
Mark Gronowski helped unlock things last year, but he has departed, leaving a crater-sized position that is going to be a battle between Jeremy Hecklinski and Hank Brown. CBS Sports is leaning towards Hecklinski winning the job before Week 1, but even then, aren’t high on him.
CBS Sports ranked all of the Big Ten quarterbacks and has placed the Hawkeyes at the bottom of the list at No. 18.
18. Jeremy Hecklinski, Iowa
Iowa is a QB battle between Hecklinski and Hank Brown, but reading the tea leaves (Brown started No. 2 last year but Hecklinski seemed to pass him on the depth chart), I’m leaning toward Hecklinski winning the job out of camp. Either way, I haven’t seen a whole lot of either, and if history is any great indicator, odds are Iowa’s not going to have the best QB in the Big Ten. Everybody was thrilled with Mark Gronowski last year, and he didn’t throw his first TD in conference play until Iowa’s fifth Big Ten game. – Tom Fornelli, ESPN
Jeremy Hecklinski, while inexperienced, comes from a strong background. The product of Walton High School and Mariette, Georgia, Hecklinski was a three-star prospect in the class of 2024, ranking as the No. 40 quarterback overall, per 247Sports.
He appeared in just two games for Iowa last year, a 37-0 win over Wisconsin and a 41-3 win over Minnesota, to close things out. He was just 2-2 for 8 yards, while adding one rush for six yards and a touchdown.
