WNBA rules on Indiana Fever's appeal of Caitlin Clark technical foul vs Mercury

INDIANAPOLIS — Caitlin Clark’s technical foul from Monday night’s game against Phoenix will not be rescinded, the league told IndyStar on Thursday afternoon.

The Fever put in an official appeal for Clark’s tech, which was her fifth of the season, when she received it as part of a bigger fourth-quarter kerfuffle on Monday night. Five total techs were doled out, including offsetting ones on DeWanna Bonner and Sophie Cunningham, as well as Alyssa Thomas and Myisha Hines-Allen.

Clark’s tech, which she said postgame she got for clapping, did not offset, giving the Mercury a technical free-throw (Bonner missed).

“It’s ridiculous,” Clark said following the Fever’s 86-77 win over Phoenix on Monday. “I got a technical for clapping. We should all just go on the calendar now and pick a game that I’m going to be suspended for if I’m gonna get technicals for clapping … if any technical should be taken away, it should be that one, if it’s truly for clapping, that’s what they said they gave it to me for was for clapping. It’s just ridiculous, so I don’t understand it at all.”

But the league ultimately determined that Clark deserved that tech, which Clark said referee Gerda Gatling told her was for both clapping and instigating, and let it stand. Clark will remain at five technical fouls on the season, which is three away from an automatic one-game suspension.

Clark’s specific health status is unknown at this time, as she left Wednesday’s game with a back injury in the third quarter.

The Fever are off Thursday and practice Friday ahead of their game against Los Angeles on Saturday.
