Man killed in gunfire exchange with Evansville police

EVANSVILLE — A man is dead after initiating a gunfight with a plainclothes Evansville police officer, according to police.

The incident happened at a home on the 500 block of Colonial Avenue, said EPD Sgt. Anthony Aussieker.

Aussieker said officers were dispatched to the home around 1 p.m. on an emergency medical response call. A male possibly was overdosing, he said.

“(The male) was upright and breathing but was not responding, possibly fell out of the shower and hit his head,” Aussieker said. “One of our plainclothes officers was in the area, responded, was going to assist.”

The male from the shower fired at the officer, Aussieker said, and the officer returned fire.

“And then the suspect did not survive,” Aussieker said.

A woman and a child were present in the home but were not harmed, the police spokesman said.

“As far as where the exchange of gunfire happened, those details are not clear right now,” he said. “We are clarifying details on where the exchange (of gunfire) happened.”

A body was obscured by red tarp in the home’s front yard early Thursday afternoon. A few feet away, an EPD officer could be seen searching the grounds with what appeared to be a metal detector.

Aussieker did not disclose a name or approximate age of the individual killed, saying only that he was “a white male.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.
