The general South Bend area is entering a heat wave that may be tempered by weekend storms and that could run until Monday or Tuesday, July 28-29.
Thursday, July 24, is expected to be the hottest, with temperatures in the low to mid 90s but heat indexes between 100 and 105 degrees, meteorologist Nathan Marsili with the National Weather Service for northern Indiana said.
On Friday and Saturday, July 25-26, temperatures may drop to the mid-80s and heat index to the mid-90s, he said, though it will still be quite humid.
Sunday and Monday, July 27-28, will see the heat climb a bit to the upper 80s to 90 degrees, with heat indexes in the upper 90s.
On Tuesday, July 29, Marsili said, the humidity could drop, and a weather front could bring temperatures back to normal by the middle of the week.
Storms could arrive late in the evening Thursday, July 24, heavy in some spots, and run into Friday, when there might be scattered rain, he said.
Also, there are chances for showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, July 26, though much of that depends on how the system develops as it moves across the Midwest.
The storms, Marsili said, could tamp down the temperatures and prevent it from becoming a “prolonged” heat wave.
