Water main break shuts down intersection on west side of Indianapolis

A water main break early on June 12 closed the intersection of West Morris Street and South Lynhurst Road on the west side of Indianapolis.

The issue was discovered shortly after 7 a.m. and police said the break was “flooding the intersection” and creating a traffic hazard.

Citizens Energy Group is reporting that about 20 customers are affected by the break as of 9:20 a.m. The road will be closed through the evening rush hour, a spokesperson said. The cause of the break was not immediately known.

“This isn’t even the first time this has happened,” said Sandy Wallace, who lives near the intersection. Her family stood in the yard of their flooded home as crews worked to survey the damage.

Larry Wallace said their furnace and water heater are under about 2 feet of water. Both were replaced about two years ago after another water main break.

Restoration teams are on site to speak with homeowners about damages, a Citizens spokesperson said.

A few months ago, in March, a water main break on the city’s east side led to a drop in pressure in areas including Christian Park, Irvington, and around the fairgrounds that forced residents to boil their water for safety. That break also closed the courthouse and affected the Community Justice Center and Community East Hospital, among others.

This is at least the second major water line break this year on the city’s east side.

And in mid-January, a water main break tore a 6-foot wide hole into the road near the intersection of North Emerson Avenue and East 10th Street. While emergency repair crews from Citizens Energy Group were driving to the scene, one car drove into the hole and had to be towed out as water gushed across the street. Several of the properties nearest to the intersection were without water for several hours.
