Former Michigan coach Beilein coming to Boyne City for coaches, shooting clinics

BOYNE CITY — John Beilein has given Michigan sports fans a number of memories to look back on.

Those have either been good or bad, whether you’ve been wearing maize and blue or green and white.

But regardless of the colors or allegiance, Beilein, the former University of Michigan men’s basketball coach, has always believed in giving back and continues to do so beyond his coaching years.

He’s done that by helping along future basketball generations and will do so soon in northern Michigan with a pair of Boyne City High School hosted shooting camps and a coaching clinic.

Beilein will put on the clinics from Wednesday to Friday, June 25-27. Each shooting clinic filled up quickly with 100 participants and are closed for registration.

The girls camp will take place on June 26, with grades fourth through eight at 9 a.m. to noon and a 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. ninth through 12th grade session. The same schedule will follow for the boys clinic on June 27.

Both clinics will take place in the Boyne City High School gym, with Boyne City coaches helping run the clinics.

Boyne City head girls basketball coach Mike Wilson and his team got some coaching from Beilein, who has a home in the area, last summer and came away obviously impressed.

“He came in and worked with some Boyne girls last year and to sit back and watch him, you know why he was so successful, just listening to him talk,” Wilson said. “I think more than anything, it’s a shooting camp and that’s one of his specialties. He just really breaks it down in a way that’s a little bit different than we’re used to hearing, but it’s right and it works. He’s got a recipe.”

The coaches clinic is also a great opportunity for northern Michigan coaches to get their own coaching. The clinic is free to attend for all high school basketball coaches from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 25.

“I think we’ll have a great turnout for that as well,” Wilson added. “He’s fun to listen to. There was no signup for that. You can just show up. It went out to as many coaches as we could hit, so I think we’ll have a good turnout.”

Beilein of course made a name for himself in Michigan by leading the University of Michigan men’s basketball team for 12 years between 2007 and 2019.

He brought the Wolverines to the NCAA Final Four twice, with two Big Ten tournament titles and a pair of Big Ten regular season titles as well.

He finished his NCAA coaching career with a 754-425 record, which included stops at Richmond and West Virginia, before heading to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2019.

Beilein’s coaching career began at the high school level in New York, leading Newfane Senior High.
