Wapahani softball player Sydney Tomey has been voted The Star Press East Central Indiana Athlete of the Week for April 27-May 2, brought to you by IU Health.
Tomey went 1-for-4 with four RBIs to lead Wapahani to its first win of the season with a 21-10 result over Monroe Central on Tuesday, April 28. Tomey drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning for her first RBI, then blasted a walk-off three-run home run that triggered the mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth.
Tomey received 22,926 out of 39,022 votes cast (58.75%). This week’s runner-up was Daleville softball player Kyra Osborne, who gathered 13,199 votes (33.82%).
Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated and can be named Athlete of the Week only once per season, per sport. Athletes from one school cannot win more than three consecutive weeks.
