One man was in critical condition and two police officers were injured after a shooting July 22 on the northeast side of Indianapolis.
Few details about the shooting were available during an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department briefing with journalists just before midnight near the scene of the shooting.
IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson, a spokesperson, told reporters that officers were sent to a disturbance in the 8000 block of E. 37th Street just before 10:30 p.m.
There was a man and a woman at the scene, Thompson said. The man shot and struck two IMPD officers, Thompson said, prompting at least one of those officers to return fire at the man.
The man was in critical condition at a nearby hospital, which Thompson declined to identify.
Thompson did not say where any of the three people were struck.
Both IMPD officers were taken to Eskenazi Hospital and were in stable condition.
“I am asking for your thoughts and prayers,” Thompson said. “This was a very tragic incident for this community, for the city of Indianapolis, and should not happen within our community.”
IMPD Chief Tanya Terry was expected to provide an update outside Eskenazi Hospital sometime after midnight.
