Brace for some early spring showers during your commute home this Thursday. Bloomington is likely in for a round of rain and thunderstorms on Feb. 19 as a warm front moves through the region, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.
Rainfall, gusty winds likely on Thursday afternoon
There’s currently a 60% chance of precipitation on Thursday, starting around 2 to 3 p.m. and lasting throughout the night. There’s a chance for scattered thunderstorms throughout the region as well, White says.
Rainfall amounts will vary between a tenth to a quarter of an inch, with the possibility of more intense rainfall during thunderstorms.
Andrew White, a meteorologist with NWS Indianapolis, encourages commuters to dress accordingly and drive with extra caution during their commutes home.
“People might not be used to rain like this so early in the year,” said Andrew White, a meteorologist with NWS Indianapolis. “We want to make sure people aren’t caught off guard.”
Throughout the week, White says folks can expect warmer temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the day, before temperatures start tapering off into the 40s and 50s into the weekend. There’s also likely to be moderate wind winds between 10 to 13 mph on Wednesday, and speeds between 5 to 9 mph on Thursday.
Slight chance for severe storms on Thursday
The Storm Prediction Center has placed the Bloomington area in a “slight risk” zone for severe storm potential on Thursday.
The main concerns are damaging winds, hail and a few tornadoes.
