'The Bear' characters head to Indiana in surprise episode ahead of Season 5

“The Bear” dropped a surprise flashback episode that was released on Tuesday, May 5, with characters crossing the state line into Indiana.

The episode takes place in Gary, Indiana, which is a a little less than an hour outside the city of Chicago, where the rest of the show takes place.

What is ‘Gary’ about?

“Gary” is a standalone flashback episode centered on Carmy’s (Jeremy Allen White) late brother Mikey, played by Jon Bernthal, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach’s Richie, who travel together on a work trip to Gary, Indiana, and wind up with a few hours to kill. Bernthal and Moss-Bachrach wrote the episode together.

“We are so excited to finally share this little adventure with Richie and Mikey,” Moss-Bachrach wrote on Instagram, also telling fans to find the episode by searching “Gary” on Hulu.

“Making this was a dream come true,” he added. “Thanks to the beautiful people of Gary, Indiana and as always Chicago, Illinois.”

How to watch ‘The Bear’ surprise episode

The episode, “Gary,” is about an hour long, and it’s listed separately from the main show.

Subscribers to Hulu have access to the episode and the rest of the show.

What is ‘The Bear’ about?

“The Bear” centers on troubled chef Carmy (White), who at the start of the first season comes home to Chicago to run a sandwich shop following the death of his brother. Bernthal appears sporadically throughout the series, though his character died before the events of Season 1.

A release date for Season 5 of “The Bear” hasn’t been announced, though all four previous seasons were released near the end of June.
