South Bend school board approves Chartwells food procurement contract

SOUTH BEND — South Bend schools has entered into a contract with food service company Chartwells for food procurement and consulting services next school year.

On Wednesday, May 27, trustees voted 5-2, with board members Bill Sniadecki and Jeanette McCullough against, to approve the agreement with Chartwells, running July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. Under the agreement, SBCSC will pay Chartwells around $414,000.

This comes after the school board voted in April to terminate a prior contract with Chartwells and in-source SBCSC’s food service management at the end of June — a move that district Chief Financial Officer Ahnaf Tahmid previously said is expected to save the district $1.3 million.

In April, district leadership said the transition would apply only to the management of the district’s food service, and SBCSC would continue to contract out the purchasing of food and supplies. The district then began accepting bids for the contract.

According to the agreement, Chartwells is expected to provide a range of services, including purchasing school meal products and supplies, assisting with district training, and managing supply ordering and inventory.
