Sophie Cunningham on pointing at Bonner: 'She was losing (it) and all I did was point'

Indiana Fever wing Sophie Cunningham explained why she pointed at DeWanna Bonner during the Monday, June 22 game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on her Show Me Something podcast.

Fever guard Caitlin Clark committed a personal foul on Bonner with 7:57 remaining in the fourth quarter as she tried to defend Bonner’s post-up at the elbow with Indiana holding a 73-56 lead. Bonner turned aggressively to get Clark’s body off of her. Clark proceeded to chirp at the Mercury forward, an ex-teammate. Clark said the referee gave her a technical for “clapping” and “instigating” during the skirmish.

As Clark raised her hand and prompted the crowd to cheer following her spat with Bonner, Myisha Hines-Allen and Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas stood face-to-face and got into a heated exchange. Clark soon realized she received a technical. As she debated the decision with the refs, Bonner and Cunningham were at odds.

The two pointed at each other for a period of time after the words were spoken. Cunningham won that battle, holding her point for roughly 10 seconds while looking at Bonner, who was making her case with the officials. The refs gave offsetting technical fouls to Hines-Allen and Thomas, and Cunningham and Bonner. Hines-Allen pushed Thomas as she drove to the basket with 7:49 left in the fourth, earning her a second technical and an ejection.

“My tech was the weakest thing I’ve ever seen in my life,” Cunningham said. “(Bonner’s) always involved. Get your (stuiff) together, sis. (Bonner) did something extra, CC got the tech. I was talking to the ref, ‘If Caitlin is going to get one, then why isn’t (Bonner) getting one?’

“I was just kind of pointing and she’s like, ‘Don’t you point at me.’ You shouldn’t say that. I didn’t say a word. That is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done. I think it’s dumb but it was (upsetting her) and I couldn’t help myself. She was losing (it) and all I did was point.

“I didn’t say a word.”
