Members of an athletic team were traveling in the school’s mini buses, police said, but did not specify what team. New Prairie High School’s junior varsity baseball team was scheduled to play at Hobart High School, the Hobart High School Athletic Department confirmed in a Facebook post when announcing the game was cancelled. The varsity game between the two schools scheduled to be played at New Prairie was also cancelled, Hobart High School said. Several people were injured and were transported to the hospital for treatment, police said.

As officers cleared the crash, U.S. 20 eastbound at Indiana-39, westbound U.S. 20 at Indiana-2 and Fail Road was closed. As of 6:30 p.m. May 8, the sheriff’s office said the scene was cleared and closed roadways were reopened.
