MUNCIE, IN — A Wayne County man has been accused of firing at least one gunshot at a building near the Ball State University campus and then repeatedly threatening to kill Muncie police officers.
Payton Michael Sheffer, 22, of Greens Fork, was arrested about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 12, after emergency dispatchers received a report of “a male firing a firearm into a dwelling,” according to an affidavit.
Officers responded to the scene of the reported gunfire in the 500 block of North Dill Street and said they found Sheffer, who matched the description of the shooter.
He was determined to be carrying a Glock 19 handgun.
The court document said he declined to discuss the incident with officers, who found a shell casing matching Sheffer’s gun near a shattered window.
Sheffer was taken to IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital for an examination before being delivered to the Delaware County Jail. Officers reported he was uncooperative and once at the jail “refused to have a seat and began to pull away from officers.”
He reportedly made “numerous threats to kill police ‘on sight’ when he gets released from jail,” the affidavit said.
Sheffer was released from the jail on Sunday evening after posting a $12,500 bond. Delaware County Prosecutor Eric Hoffman’s office will determine whether he will face formal charges.
The Greens Fork man was convicted of dealing in marijuana, a misdemeanor, in Wayne Superior Court 3 in 2023.
