It was a relatively quiet City Track Meet at Bloomington South.
A good handful of personal records were set, but school records remained intact. A few star athletes were rested or ran off-events with just one more meet on the schedule for next week’s North Invitational. And there are just a handful of spots up in the air as the coaches get ready to settle on their postseason lineups.
Only after the South girls and North boys put a cap on their team wins by going 1-2 in the 4×400 relays did the place get rowdy. That’s when four teams of South throwers (three boys, one girls), took to the track for a special 4×100 relay.
As they spun the batons around the track, the noise from their teammates grew louder, with the crescendo at the finish line. It’s everything South boys head coach Larry Williams wants to see from his team.
“The biggest lesson tonight, we had that throwers relay and all the excitement they had with that,” Williams said. “As I told them afterward, ‘Gentlemen, that’s the competition, right there. That’s competing. But you weren’t worried about beating someone from across town or beating someone on your own team.
“The rest of you were all excited. That’s what we have to have, that spirit every time we go into a meet as a collective group and as a team.'”
Winders’ return lifts North
A couple key pieces are still on the shelf and senior 3,200 ace Jacob Mitchell tried to run an 800 (finishing in 2:10) as he battles his return from a serious illness. But the Cougars were again still too strong in a 75½-51½ win.
A welcome sight was senior Caleb Winders back on the track and looking as good as ever. He hardly looked stressed in running a 1:53.72 to win the 800 ahead of teammate Caelan D’Onofrio (1:55.93) as Jake Gentry (1:59.51) also broke two minutes.
“It looked like a pretty comfortable 1:53,” North coach Justin Helmer said.
Winders also battled teammate James Bosco (400 winner in 50.70) as anchors on two balanced 4×400 relay teams that still went 1-2. Each had a split in the 47s.
D’Onofrio won the 1,600 in 4:21.05 with Shep Jackson next at 4:23.45. Jackson went on to take the 3,200.
Alan Hays was far ahead of the field again in the hurdles, running right around his career bests with a 14.29 and a 38.47. Josiah Powell was second in the 100 (10.96) and third in the 200 (22.67).
Adis Hamidovic continued his strong run in discus with a 181-3 and a career best 57-8 in shot put to win both. Quinn Walters was second in discus (159-10) and third in shot (51-10½).
“We’re definitely going to have some decisions,” Helmer said. “The guys will be harder than the girls just because of the depth on the guys in figuring the best path forward. We have to look at what do we need to do at the state meet and work our way back.”
For South, Gabe Taylor, after running 10.75s at Conference Indiana, won the 100 in 10.77 and the 200 in 22.04, with Simon Barnes third in the 100 at 10.96 and second in the 200 (22.04). Those two helped the 4×100 relay win in 43.16.
Arthur Banks won pole vault at 15-0. Noah Field was second in shot put at 53-9¾
“I think next week will more of a deciding factor,” Williams said. “Today, we kind of stuck to our normal lineup. Some kids showed a little more than they have. Look at the 1,600, Luke Reinhardt and Matthew Zinkan in the low 4:30s, which says a lot there.
“We had several other PRs in the 1,600. It was really encouraging for us there. The sprinters are still doing their jobs, but they are feeling it in their legs, so we’ll adjust there.”
South girls sprinting to finish
South’s 88-44 win included some top times in the sprints, where hurdler Adrian Shaevitz joined in, as did Ellie Barada.
In the 100, four Panthers crossed in under 12.80, led by Violet Hall in a season best 12.40 to nip Shaevitz by .01. Barada took the 200 in a 25.07, followed by Hall (25.40), Shaevitz (26.46) and Helena Cutshall (26.72). Lexi Kollbaum also moved down from her distance races to spin a 57.82 to win the 400.
Shaevitz (17-6¼), Hall (16-7¼) and Cutshall (16-6¾) also stretched their legs in the long jump, going 1-2-3.
“We’re still thinking about what our best spots are to grab some points, thinking about relays and individual events,” South coach Jill Rensink said. “We’re trying to figure out our best opportunities, so there’s still a couple of spots we’re thinking about.
“I’m really happy with how our sprinters ran tonight. Our 100 and 200 kids ran great, so that bodes well for our 4-by-1, that would be awesome if we could score some points in that at the state meet.”
North’s Ashley Greer swept the throws with a shot put of 35-5¼ and a discus of 116-3. Delilah Kilbride won pole vault (9-0). Lila Childers won the 800 (2:24.28) and Sophie Winkle took the 100 hurdles.
“I think overall, we had a good night,” Helmer said. “I liked how we competed tonight. Lots of PRs. We’ve just got to do things right over the next few weeks to set us up for hopefully a good (boys) state meet.
“On the girls side, just try to get as many people as we can qualified with a small team. There’s some old and a lot of new and try to get them some experience up there.”
South Unified ties for CI title
Bloomington South tied with Columbus North to win the last Conference Indiana Unified Track meet on Thursday, April 30.
The Panthers got wins from Breyton Mellor (shot put), Trevon Murphy (long jump), Michael Mmadi (400) and the boys 4×100 relay with Murphy, Yoyo Yeager, Oliver Parker and Shaun Cooper.
