The St. Joseph County Prosecutor’s office filed multiple charges Monday, Dec. 22, against Chad Bean, 53, following an hours-long stand-off Sunday, Dec. 21, at a home on Conner Drive in Mishawaka, according to a press release issued Tuesday, Dec. 23, by the South Bend Police Department.
According to the release and charging documents from the prosecutor’s office, Bean has been charged with five counts of criminal confinement, all Level 3 felonies; one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony; stalking, a Level 4 felony; and stalking, a Level 6 felony.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Bean’s family notified the Mishawaka Police Department at around 7:14 a.m. Dec. 21 that he allegedly was holding five hostages at a residence on Conner Drive and that he was armed. The St. Joseph County Metro SWAT Team responded with Mishawaka Police.
Over the next several hours, the affidavit said, Bean allowed two adults and two children to leave the house. Around 3 p.m., two teams of SWAT officers entered the house and heard “two different volleys of gunshots” that they later concluded Bean had fired, the affidavit said.
Police used an explosive device, according to the affidavit, to enter a second-floor bedroom whose door had been barricaded. Bean allegedly was pointing a rifle at police when they gained entry to the bedroom, and police shot him twice, according to the affidavit. The remaining hostage, an adult, was found in a closet in the bedroom and freed, the affidavit said.
Bean was taken to Memorial Hospital and remains, according to the press release, in critical condition.
Because of the involvement of Mishawaka Police and the county SWAT team, as per an established interlocal agreement, the South Bend Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the shooting of Bean and will forward its results to the prosecutor’s office for review.
