One person is dead following a pedestrian crash involving a garbage truck in Westland.
The incident took place about 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, on Akron Court in the Norwayne neighborhood, confirmed Matt Allen, director of public relations and government affairs for Priority Waste.
Priority Waste is contracted to handle garbage, recycling and composting in Westland. The crash involved a route truck picking up recycling, Allen said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the pedestrian’s family and our driver’s family as well,” he said.
It’s a tough thing to happen any time of the year, but particularly just before Christmas, he said.
Allen said the driver, who has been with the company for a while, was very shaken up following the incident.
The company is cooperating with investigators and awaits the results of a police investigation.
Westland police declined to comment on Tuesday, Dec. 23.
