INDIAN RIVER – It helps to have a bunch of contributors.
The Inland Lakes softball team received plenty of those during a Ski Valley doubleheader on Friday, May 8, which saw the Bulldogs sweep Gaylord St. Mary with 9-2 and 9-6 victories at Cooperation Park.
In the opener, the Bulldogs were led by freshman Azalia Carper, who homered for the second time this season. Pitching-wise, she earned the win by striking out 10, allowing two hits and walking one.
The Bulldogs saw several players perform well offensively, including Kennadi O’Boyle, who recorded a team-high two hits (triple). Alexis Powell (RBI, two runs), Alexys Langworthy (two RBIs, two runs), Adi Fenstermaker (two runs), Taylor Nutt and Khali Woollard finished with a hit apiece.
Carper (double, RBI), Nutt (RBI, two runs), Kalli Williamson (double) and Langworthy each tallied two-hit games in the nightcap, while O’Boyle (double, RBI, two runs) and Woollard had a hit apiece.
Carper was the winning pitcher again, striking out seven in six innings.
“The girls are starting to play better,” Inland Lakes coach Krissi Thompson said. “They struggle once in a while, but that’s going to happen when you have a young program. Other than that, I’m quite happy with the comeback (in the second game). It took us time to adjust to the slower pitching, but once we got it, we were able to do quite well.”
Inland Lakes (10-6, 8-4 Ski Valley) takes on Central Lake at home on Monday, May 11.

Davis nets hat trick, Chiefs shut out Kingsley
CHEBOYGAN – Three days after it was snakebitten by missed chances, the Cheboygan girls soccer team was much more clinical in a 5-0 victory over Kingsley at home on Thursday, May 7.
The Chiefs received a second hat trick this season from senior Morgan Davis, who scored late in the first half to put Cheboygan up 2-0, then added a penalty kick and another goal over the final 40 minutes. Senior Jaelyn Wheelock started the scoring three minutes into the first half, when she put the Chiefs up 1-0 thanks to an assist from sophomore Mallory Ekdahl, who assisted on Davis’s goal later in the half. Junior defender Maddie Long was Cheboygan’s other goal scorer, putting the Chiefs up 4-0 on a long-ranged blast during the second half.
“The kids got it clicking tonight,” Cheboygan coach Tom Markham said. “We had a lot of good attempts on goal, and the girls were hungry. We worked on our finishing in practice coming into tonight, and we put some strong finishes together.”
Emma Howard rounded out the Chiefs with an assist on Davis’s last goal.
Cheboygan (7-3-2, 4-1-0) will host Northern Shores leader Harbor Springs (9-1-2, 6-0-1) in a 5 p.m. pink-out game on Monday, May 11. The Chiefs will wear pink to support cancer awareness, with all proceeds going to Dylan Wilkinson, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 ALK positive non-small lung cancer last year.
