Tigers have Gage Workman ready if Kerry Carpenter needs IL stint

Kansas City, Mo. – The Tigers have arranged for utility player Gage Workman to join the team in Kansas City while they await a final medical decision on outfielder Kerry Carpenter.

Carpenter came out of the game Saturday night after banging his left shoulder into the side wall at Kauffman Stadium while chasing after Bobby Witt, Jr.’s inside-the-park home run.

The Tigers were going to evaluate Carpenter again Sunday morning before deciding if a stint on the injured list was required.

Meanwhile, Workman was held out of Triple-A Toledo’s lineup and making his way to Kansas City. The Tigers will have to purchase his contract from Toledo and make a corresponding move on the 40-man roster before he can be active Sunday.

Carpenter would be the 17th player on the Tigers’ 40-man roster to be placed on the injured list.

Workman, 26, has been destroying Triple-A pitching this season, slashing .358/.413/.590 with a 1.003 OPS. He’s played second, short and third as well as in the outfield.

A teammate of Spencer Torkelson’s at Arizona State, he was drafted in the fourth round by the Tigers in 2020 and then taken in the Rule 5 Draft by the Cubs before the 2025 season. He played 12 games between the Cubs and White Sox before signing back with the Tigers last season.

This is a developing story. Check back for more updates.
