INDIANAPOLIS — Daniel James Hunt died over the weekend at Eskenazi Hospital where he was airlifted for burn treatment after a Nov. 15 house fire in Lafayette.
Hunt, 36, was in the back bedroom of 153 Wise Drive when it caught fire, said Todd Budd, Lafayette assistant chief of fire prevention.
The Marion County coroner’s office will perform a forensic autopsy, Coroner Carrie Costello said Monday.
The fire started in the bedroom on the southwest side of the house about 8 a.m. Nov. 15, according to the Lafayette Fire Department’s investigation.
Hunt and a woman were inside the house at the time of the fire. Hunt was critically burned and airlifted to Eskenazi Hospital, according to the fire investigation and Costello.
The woman in the house suffered minor smoke inhalation, Budd said. She was treated and released from a local hospital for her injuries. The fire also killed several pets in the house on the city’s south side just west of Poland Hill Road.
The fire remains under investigation, Budd said.
Local investigators have not yet been able to find an ignition source, Budd said. Material collected at the scene has been sent to a laboratory to help determine the cause of the fire.
