LB rankings by NFL talent evaluators underscore uncertainties for Colts

Jeremy Fowler’s annual rankings of the top linebackers in the NFL are the latest example of the uncertainties that surround this unit for the Indianapolis Colts.

What makes these rankings unique is that this list isn’t constructed solely on Fowler’s opinion. Rather, a total of 70 NFL execs, coaches, and scouts were the voters. Other elements, such as research, interviews, and film analysis by Matt Bowen, factor in as well.

With all of that taken into account, Fowler then puts together the top 10, highlights a few honorable mentions, and notes which players received votes.

And not unsurprisingly, of the 23 linebackers mentioned overall, none of them play for the Colts.

Linebacker remains a major question mark for the Colts

In part, the Colts weren’t positioned well to make these rankings, with CJ Allen and Bryce Boettcher both being rookies, although that underscores the inexperience that Indianapolis will be relying on.

Jaylon Carlies, who, along with Allen and Boettcher, saw snaps with the starters during offseason programs, has barely played over 200 career snaps, most of which came in 2024.

Akeem Davis-Gaither, another player rotated in with the ones as the Colts search for answers, has often been a special teams player or come off the bench for much of his career.

Until we see more from this group, unknowns will linger. GM Chris Ballard did want to get younger and faster on defense, which he accomplished at linebacker, although whether or not that leads to steady play remains to be seen.

Lou Anarumo’s disguise-heavy scheme and what should be a high-end secondary should help provide a buffer for this linebacker unit.
