A child is dead and two adults are in critical condition after a hit-and-run crash on Indianapolis’ southeast side.
At about 9:15 p.m. on May 7, a Dodge Charger struck a Honda Civic at the South State Avenue and East Raymond Street intersection. One or both cars then hit a bicyclist towing a child in a small passenger trailer.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the child as a 4-year-old, Alan Marcelo Salas-Garcia, who died at Riley Children’s Hospital.
Police believe the Charger ran a red light. The Honda had a green light, and the bicyclist crossing the road had a walk symbol.
The Honda’s driver and the bicyclist were both taken to area hospitals in critical condition. The child in the bike trailer was pronounced dead around 10 p.m., according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department spokesperson.
The Charger’s driver fled the scene on foot. IMPD established a perimeter around the crash site and searched for the Charger’s driver with dogs for several hours but were unable to find them.
IMPD Night Watch Capt. Don Weilhammer told Fox59 it didn’t appear the Charger’s driver was trying to beat a yellow traffic light.
“It had been a solid red (light) for quite some time,” Weilhammer said.
No description of the Charger’s driver is available, but police are asking businesses and homes near the crash to check surveillance footage for anything out of the ordinary in the hours after the crash.
Anybody with information can call IMPD’s crash investigators at (317) 327-2630. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477(TIPS) or 800-222-8477(TIPS).
