Fishers 28, Hamilton Southeastern 16 (read more)

A fast start was all the difference in the Mudsock rivalry game on Friday night.

Fishers blitzed rival and Class 6A fifth-ranked Hamilton Southeastern with three first-quarter touchdowns on the way to a 28-16 victory in front of 10,000 spectators. How it happened:

Turning point: After the poor start, Hamilton Southeastern rallied to pull within 21-10 late in the second quarter. The Royals had a chance to get closer, facing fourth-and-3 from the Fishers’ 10. HSE coach Michael Kelly decided to go for it instead of attempting a 27-yard field goal. A pass by Terry Walker III fell incomplete and the Royals went into halftime still trailing, 21-10.

“I thought we needed some momentum going into the second half and we were going to get the ball,” Kelly said. “Looking back, I wish I would have kicked the ball but you can’t change it now.”

Player of the game: Take your pick between Fishers’ quarterback Gage Sturgill and running back Ryan Thembulembu. The Tigers’ 21-0 start was fueled by both players. Sturgill, the Western Illinois recruit, finished 11-for-20 passing for 174 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 86 yards and a TD on nine carries. The versatile Thembulembu ran for 105 yards and a TD on 16 carries and caught a 15-yard TD pass.

Play of the game: I still do not quite understand how he did it but Sturgill’s 54-yard touchdown run with 3:18 left in the third quarter was essentially the clincher. He weaved in and out of traffic, looked like he was going out of bounds at one point, and managed to keep his feet and make it to the end zone. That run gave the Tigers a 28-10 lead. HSE was playing without quarterback Terry Walker III, who injured his knee in the third quarter and did not return. — Kyle Neddenriep

Brownsburg 55, Avon 47 (read more)

Class 6A No. 1 Brownsburg remains undefeated, but the Bulldogs showed some signs of vulnerability in a 55-47 win over a pesky ninth-ranked Avon team that refused to quit in the Hendricks County and Hoosier Crossroads Conference rivalry. In addition to the 102 combined points scored, the two teams accounted for 1,067 yards of offense.

Senior running back Aiden Jobe amassed four touchdowns for Brownsburg (4-0) and junior quarterback Oscar Frye threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns on 14-of-20 passing for the Bulldogs.

Avon (2-2) running back Andre Warfield had 282 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Quarterback Jace Cameron finished with 240 passing yards on 23-of-33 with two touchdowns.

Avon last beat Brownsburg in 2019. The Bulldogs had won nine in a row coming in.

Here are three takeaways from the game:

Turning Point: Avon had just scored to cut the Brownsburg lead to 42-39 early in the fourth. The Bulldogs needed a big drive to keep the Orioles’ offense off the field. Facing a key third-and-2, junior running back Brady Lewis picked up a first down on a short gain. Three plays later, Lewis broke through the Avon defense for a 25-yard gain, setting up a short touchdown run by Jobe for a 10-point lead that would prove too much for the Orioles to overcome.

Play of the Game: Trailing 27-10 with less than 2 minutes left in the first half, Avon desperately needed a score to keep it close. Cameron bought time in the pocket before firing to junior tight end Rayvon Martin in the back corner of the end zone. Martin, with a defender face-guarding and holding him, leapt to pull down the pass and keep his feet inbounds for his first career touchdown. He would add another short touchdown reception before the half ended.

Top Performer:  Jobe entered Friday’s game with 179 rushing yards on the season and one catch for five yards. The Brownsburg senior running back broke loose against Avon, rushing for 203 yards and taking a screen pass 81 yards for a touchdown. He finished with touchdown runs of 67, 50, and 4 yards.

Honorable mention to Warfield, who had 215 yards rushing in the first half alone. — Paul Shepherd

Warren Central 31, Lawrence Central 21 (read more)

Warren Central let a 14-point lead slip away, but the Warriors made enough defensive plays in the second half to pull out a 31-21 win over Lawrence Central.

Turning Point: Lawrence Central capitalized on a Keyon Thomas lost fumble, scoring on an Albert Gooden III 69-yard touchdown reception two plays later, tying the score at 14. The teams alternated scoring possessions until Dexter Smith intercepted Santana Allen in the fourth quarter. Warren Central added a 23-yard field goal to seal the win.

Play of the Game: Everyone loves to see big men showing off their athletic ability. Warren Central went to its jumbo package in the first half, snapping the ball to Finch, and the three-star defensive lineman found the corner, turning up field for 15 yards on fourth-and-one.

Player of the Game: Jerimy Finch Jr.  Finch did everything for Warren Central, scoring a touchdown, converting a first down and recording a sack. Finch applied constant pressure on the LC offense. Even when he didn’t get home, his penetration pressured LC quarterback Santana Allen, forcing errant passes or drawing holding calls, keeping the Bears offense behind the sticks. — Akeem Glaspie
