Domestic violence survivors need us now more than ever | Letter to the Editor

As the federal government shutdown begins, the weight feels heavy for survivors in Indiana who depend on critical services.

It also marks the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, reminding us that abuse touches far too many lives.

The national theme, #Every1KnowsSome1, is especially true in Indiana, where nearly half of women and men report experiencing abuse. Behind every number is a neighbor, coworker, friend or family member.

Survivors need us now more than ever. Domestic violence fatalities in Indiana remain 30% higher than before the pandemic.

Our partners across the state report more high-lethality cases — yet these crises come as federal funding for essential services is being cut.

This October, we urge everyone — survivors and allies alike — to act. Support your local programs. Urge lawmakers to protect funding. And help normalize conversations about abuse, reducing stigma and making it easier for survivors to seek help and feel less alone.

Visit icadv.org to learn more about programs in your community and how to support survivors. Together, we can prevent domestic violence and ensure survivors are never left without help.
