The Indianapolis Colts open the 2026 NFL preseason by visiting the New England Patriots Aug. 13.
The Colts enter the season with a backup quarterback battle between Anthony Richardson, the No. 4 overall 2023 draft pick, and Riley Leonard, a sixth-round pick in 2025. The winner of this battle could open the regular season as the starter, depending on Daniel Jones’ status as he recovers from an Achilles injury suffered late last season.
Another interesting battle features kickers Blake Grupe and Spencer Shrader. Shrader started last season well (13-of-14 field goals, long of 52 yards) before he suffered an ACL injury when he was run into during a kick. Grupe came in and performed well the rest of the way (11-of-11, long of 60). Now they vie for the job.
