Colts' X-factor on defense heading into training camp

Who will be the biggest X-factor on the Indianapolis Colts’ defense this season?

We know that in order for the Colts to win games, their star players, like DeForest Buckner, Sauce Gardner, and Cam Bynum, have to consistently play at high levels.

But the X-factor, who may not be at the same level as the players mentioned, can still have a major impact on the outcome, depending on how they play.

Indianapolis Colts’ X-factor on defense for 2026 season

Not knowing how the training camp battle will unfold, I’m going to name two players on defense who have X-factor potential — defensive ends Jaylahn Tuimoloau and Arden Key.

The two will be competing for the starting role opposite of Laiatu Latu, but both will factor into the defensive end rotation this season.

The Colts need more consistent pass rush juice around Latu, and it remains to be seen whether or not they have enough of that. Tuimoloau filled a small role as a rookie, while Key has been productive in his career, but oftentimes not at a high level.

As a collective defensive front, the Colts ranked 30th in ESPN’s pass rush win rate metric last season — or another way to put it, they weren’t winning their matchups often enough.

That said, if either Tuimoloau or Key can provide a pass rush boost, that could change things drastically for the Colts defense. The name of the game is getting after the quarterback. When that happens, every other defender on the field benefits from it.

Latu was quite productive last season, but at the often-rotated defensive end position, depth is crucial. We remain in wait-and-see mode as to whether or not the Colts have enough.
