Training camp may be getting underway for the Indianapolis Colts, but GM Chris Ballard is still considering adding to his roster.
According to Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan, Ballard said that he would “consider” adding a veteran wide receiver during his pre-training camp press conference.
That decision, he added, is not dependent on Alec Pierce’s health, as he continues to rehab from offseason ankle surgery.
Why might the Colts add to the wide receiver position?
While Pierce and Josh Downs will lead the way at wideout, the third starting spot is up for grabs following Michael Pittman’s departure this offseason.
Competing for that role are Ashton Dulin, Laquon Treadwell, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, and Deion Burks, with Dulin looking like the front-runner for that starting spot following offseason programs.
That said, bringing in a veteran presence could still be valuable. Dulin has primarily been a special teams contributor and had a small role on offense. Westbrook-Ikhine is coming off a down season in Miami, while Treadwell has primarily been on the practice squad with the Colts, and Burks is a rookie.
Two of the top free agent wide receivers still available are Stefon Diggs and Deebo Samuel. Keenan Allen remains available as well.
Pierce, Downs, and Tyler Warren will shoulder the workload in the passing game, but whoever ends up as WR3 will see regular playing time. The Colts could also take a committee approach at this position with matchups and in-game situations dictating who is on the field.
From a salary cap perspective, the Colts have more than enough space to make an addition.
