With minicamp behind us, let’s break down the Indianapolis Colts’ roster through a different lens.
In this series, we will be going position-by-position and placing each player into one of three categories — are they a lock to make the team, likely to make the team, or on the bubble and fighting for a role?
What this exercise can do is help bring into focus how many roster spots are actually available this summer, along with highlighting who may be on the outside and looking in.
Up next are the cornerbacks.
Roster locks (3): Sauce Gardner, Charvarius Ward, Justin Walley
This trio will make up the Colts’ starting cornerback configuration this season. How the rest of the depth chart shakes out remains to be seen.
On the bubble (7): Mekhi Blackmon, Rob Carter Jr., Johnathan Edwards, Jaylon Jones, Jai’Onte’ McMillan, Cameron Mitchell, Cam Taylor-Britt
Teams typically roster five or six cornerbacks on their 53-man. So for the Colts, that likely means that two or three roster spots are up for grabs.
Blackmon played over 700 defensive snaps last season. Mitchell capitalized on the opportunities that came his way. Edwards put together a strong showing during offseason programs, while Taylor-Britt has experience playing in Lou Anarumo’s defense.
Jones was a starter in 2024, but navigated injuries last year and didn’t seem to establish himself in Anarumo’s scheme.
Of those players mentioned, two to three of them won’t make the team. Training camp will ultimately determine how the depth chart plays out.
