Two officers were injured and a suspect is dead after a shooting on the city’s east side late Wednesday.
About 10:25 p.m. July 22, 2026, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department East District officers were dispatched to reports of a disturbance between several people in the 8000 block of East 37th Street near North Franklin Road.
A 911 caller alerted police that a man involved was possibly armed with a gun.
Arriving officers encountered a man and woman outside and the man opened fire on police, striking two officers, said officer Tommy Thompson, the department’s public information officer.
At least three officers returned fire, striking the suspect, police said.
One officer was rushed to a hospital in a patrol car while medics transported the other officer. Both were in stable condition.
The suspect, who was not immediately publicly identified, died after being taken to an area hospital.
Thompson called the shooting tragic and asked the community to support the officers.
“I’m asking that the city presents prayers, its thoughts, whatever your beliefs are, to these officers and their families and to give them the respect and decency to give them time and recovery,” Thompson said during a media briefing at the scene.
A firearm was recovered from the scene, police said.
Indianapolis Police Chief Tanya Terry said during a media briefing at Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital that the officers were in stable condition “despite being attacked violently at the scene tonight.”
“Tonight our officers showed up to protect someone in need and they were met with violence and that’s not OK. It’s not OK today, it’s not OK ever,” Terry said. “We cannot allow this kind of violence against our officers to become something normal.”
She encouraged the community to get involved. “Those who protect and serve deserve better,” she said.
The chief credited the aid officers provided those injured and bulletproof protective gear as helping saves lives.
The officers who fired their weapons were wearing bodycams that were activated during the shooting, according to a department news release.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while an investigation occurs, per department procedure.
Following a criminal investigation into the shooting, the civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will hold a mandatory hearing to review the case.
