Indianapolis Colts’ head coach announced that Daniel Jones will start against the Green Bay Packers in the second preseason game.
Jones will play a couple of series, and then Anthony Richardson will replace him for the rest of the first half. The starters will play roughly a quarter, according to The Athletic’s James Boyd.
This is a slight deviation from the original plan that Steichen had put in place. With Richardson starting against Baltimore, Jones was already going to be the starter against Green Bay.
However, with Richardson exiting the preseason opener early and Jones playing 31 snaps in that contest, Richardson will now get more snaps in Week 2.
Against the Ravens, Jones was 10-for-21 passing for 144 yards. The outing had a very all-or-nothing feel. When Jones could generate a chunk play through the air, the Colts found themselves in scoring position, although they didn’t find the end zone.
However, without those plays, the Colts’ drives stalled out fairly quickly. Not helping Jones or the offense were some dropped passes and a struggling run game.
After that game, Richardson discussed the play that led to the hit and him dislocating his finger.
As Steichen has said, the most consistent of the two will be the Week 1 starter. That decision goes beyond completion rate, but the overall operation of the offense.
